Under the cloud of renewed ETA activity and with security services on maximum alert Spain has celebrated its national holiday. King Juan Carlos has led the day from the front, making an unusual personal intervention following a refusal by officials in the Basque country and Catalonia to fly the national flag on public buildings.
At several demonstrations in Catalonia an effigy of the King was burned. That him to remind people that parliamentary monarchy had given Spain its “longest-ever period…of stability and democratic prosperity”.
Just hours before the displays in Madrid there were more disturbances in the Basque country, with barricades erected in Durango. The town hall and railway installations in San Sebastien were attacked last night.
