Poland’s ambassador to Iraq has been lightly injured in a triple bomb attack on his convoy in Baghdad. Three men were killed in the assault including one bodyguard. Several more were wounded.

A staunch ally of Washington, with some 1,000 troops stationed in southern Iraq, Poland said it would not withdraw its forces in response to the attack as that would be “the worst possible mistake”.

Shortly after the bombing the ambassador was evacuated in a helicopter operated by the controversial private US security firm Blackwater, which has been heavily criticised since a shootout in Baghdad earlier this month left at least 11 Iraqis dead.

Poland has denounced today’s attack calling it an assassination attempt.
