Giant images of an anorexic woman have appeared on billboards and in newspapers across Italy, to coincide with the start of Milan fashion week. The pictures were shot by the controversial Italian photographer Oliviero Toscani. In 1992, he photographed a man dying of AIDS for a campaign for the clothing group, Benetton.
Many people stopped to look at this billboard in Milan’s Fashion Quarter:
“It frightened me at the beginning, I didn’t understand it but I think it is very positive as this person with this problem can make herself useful against the disease.”, said one woman.
The subject of the campaign, Frenchwoman Isabelle Caro has been anorexic for 15 years and weighs just 31 kilos. The Nolita campaign, which also promotes a brand of fashion clothing, has received backing from the Italian Health Ministry.
But critics have condemned the images as being too crude.
