Bomb blast hits Basque police station

world news

| |

A bomb attack in Spain’s Basque country has damaged a police station and nearby houses.No-one was injured in the blast in the early hours of this morning. The authorities say the attack was carried out by the Basque separatist organisation, ETA.

Today’s explosion was in Zarautz, northern Spain.

It follows yesterday’s arrest by French police of 13 suspects in an investigation into an attack last year on a hotel near the southwestern French city of Bayonne.

Police suspect ETA or French ETA sympathisers.

An anonymous group claimed responsibility for the hotel attack, saying it was protesting against what it calls France’s colonisation of the Basque country.

ETA has vowed to continue bomb attacks after the failure of peace talks with the Spanish government.

More than 800 people have been killed in ETA attacks in its fight for an independent state.
