Italian soldiers missing in Afghanistan

Two Italian soldiers are reported missing in Afghanistan according to Italian authorities. Italy’s defence ministry said it believed they had been kidnapped. The men went missing on Saturday together with two Afghans while in patrol on the border between Farah and Herat provinces in western Afghanistan, where more than 600 Italian troops run the regional command of the NATO-led international force.

Herat is one of the most peaceful provinces in Afghanistan, but in Farah to the south there has been a steady rise in Taliban activity in recent months. Italy has some 2,000 troops stationed in the country as part of NATO forces.
