British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has been attending his first party conference since taking over as Labour leader from Tony Blair in June. Despite attempted terrorist attacks, floods, foot and mouth and financial turbulance which led to the near collapse of Northern Rock bank, Brown remains popular.
Finance minister Alistair Darling spoke about the recent banking scare:“Last week was difficult, Difficult for Northern Rock
savers, for us all. There are lessons to be learnt – and I will make the changes we need to ensure stability,” he said.
Amid speculation that Brown may call an election for October to take advantage of Labour’s lead in the polls, the prime minister ruled nothing out.
