In Cuba, people watched their leader’s televised interview which put an end to rumours in Miami – where most of Castro’s political opponents are exiled – that the 81-year-old was dead. “People have been saying Fidel is on his last legs but here he is, he’s recovered, he’s fine, they now know in the United States he’s back in shape,” said one viewer.

In Miami, the Cuban exile group “The Democracy Movement” said they believe that, though he may still be alive, his influence is gone and changes in Cuban are just around the corner.
