Two suspected Chechen rebels and a police officer have been killed in a shootout in Dagestan. A building had been surrounded in the capital of the southern republic, and it is understood at least two suspects were holed-up inside. One of the men is reported to have blown himself up.
Special forces were backed up by armoured personnel carriers and nearby families were evacuated. Dagestan is a neighbour of Chechnya, which has suffered two wars between separatist rebels and Russian soldiers. The violence has often spilled over into Dagestan and Ingushetia.
