UN chief war crimes prosecutor Carla del Ponte has wrapped up a visit to Serbia to determine whether Belgrade is doing all it can to capture suspected war criminals. Technical talks were concluded last week between the European Union and Serbia – the first step towards eventual EU membership.
But, before signing, Brussels asked for del Ponte’s assurances on Belgrade’s efforts. Del Ponte has never shied away from berating governments for failing to hand over wanted criminals including Ratko Mladic and Radovan Karadzic. Her recommendations resulted in the freeze of Serbia’s talks with the EU last year. This time, del Ponte has specifically asked for the handover of two lesser known fugitives, considered easier to arrest.
