The United States has agreed with Israel that Hamas-run Gaza is a hostile entity. At the start of her latest Middle East trip, Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice insisted however, that America will continue to work for peace, and would not abandon the Palestinians.
“It’s no secret that the US declares Hamas a terrorist organisation, and that we have been troubled by the fact that Hamas did what they did in Gaza against legitimate Palestinian institutions, against the legitimate institutions of the Palestinian Authority. (But) We will not abandon the innocent Palestinians in Gaza, and indeed will make every effort to deal with their humanitarian needs,” she said.
Rice is scheduled to meet Israeli leaders and the Palestinian President, confined to the West Bank. But the condemnation of Gaza, and Hamas’ angry response, now complicates matters.
