Less than a day after EU experts declared the UK free of foot and mouth disease a new suspected case has been found. The reported outbreak is on a farm near Egham around 50 kilometres from the scene of the cases in August that led to a ban on meat and dairy products and live animals.
That restriction has now been re-imposed while tests are being carried out. British authorities have again acted quickly to contained the disease. The herd of cattle concerned has bin slaughtered and an exclusion zone has been set up around the area.
An investigation into the August outbreak said the virus probably came from a drainage system shared by two animal disease research laboratories in the area.
