Estrada gets life for 60m euros embezzlement

A Philippine court has jailed the former President, Joseph Estrada, for life. The 70 year-old one-time movie star was charged with four counts of corruption and one of perjury. He has said he will appeal. Estrada was overthrown in 2001 in a military- backed coup after the Philippine senate failed in a bid to impeach him. In the dock the court heard how the former president had amassed more than 60 million euros in kick backs and diverted government funds during his 30 months in office.

He now been ordered to pay it all over to the Philippine government. Fearing a repeat of the scenes of 2001, when Estrada supporters tried to storm the presidential palace, more than a thousand riot police officers were on alert in Manila.
