The Israeli Army says a rocket fired by Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip has wounded at least 30 soldiers at a military base. The most badly injured were treated at the scene – three are said to be in a serious condition. The rocket landed at the base near Ashkelon in southern Israel. Early indications suggest the injury toll is the highest ever caused by a rocket fired into Israel from the Gaza Strip.
Observers say the early morning attack is likely to intensify calls for a massive ground operation against militants firing the missiles, a course of action ruled out last week by the security cabinet.
