Portuguese prosecutor to consider Madeleine case

The parents of missing Madeleine McCann may have returned home to England but detectives in Portugal are pursuing their case against them. Police were passing details of their enquiry into the four-year-old’s disappearance to the Portuguese public prosecutor. He will then decide whether charges should be brought.

As the authorities consider the options, newspapers in Portugal continue to speculate about the McCanns and fellow Briton, Robert Murat. Like Madeleine’s mother and father, he has also been declared a formal suspect. With forensic evidence apparently central to the case, some experts have expressed fears that cross- contamination of DNA could have skewed test results.

Both Kate and Gerry McCann maintain their innocence. They are now receiving legal advice from a lawyer who once acted for the former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet. It is now more than four months since Madeleine went missing from a holiday apartment in the Algarve.
