Family and friends have been gathering at the home of Luciano Pavarotti, the world’s most famous opera singer following his death this morning. The tenor known as “the Maestro” credited with bringing opera to a mass audience had been suffering from cancer of the pancreas for more than a year. His funeral will take place in Modena, his hometown, on Saturday.
People there have been paying their own tributes to a man mourned around the world. “He was one of the best tenors we had, we’ll miss him. Modena will miss him”, said one woman. “He was also an honest man and gave a lot to charity,” said another. “I’m devastated” said a German visitor. “He was very popular in Germany”. Huge crowds are expected to pay their respects as Pavarotti lies in state at the city’s cathedral ahead of the funeral.
