Scramble! RAF fighters intercept Russian bears

world news

| |

The RAF scrambled Tornado warplanes, to intercept Russian bombers apparently heading for British airspace. Four Tornadoes took off from bases at RAF Leeming and RAF Waddington. The bombers were long-range Tupolev Tu-95 bombers, codenamed Bears by NATO. Moscow had earlier said 14 planes were on routine flights over the Atlantic, Pacific, and Arctic Oceans. Russia recently re-started strategic patrols, which stopped after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
