The Serbian Prime Minister has met the EU envoy responsible for talks on Kosovo’s independence. Vojislav Kostunica insisted that the breakaway province, which is part of Serbia but with a majority ethnic Albanian population, will remain under the rule of Belgrade. Wolfgang Ischinger knows he must find a compromise acceptable to all 27 EU member states – after warnings that divisions could undermine the bloc’s unity. Meanwhile, thousands of ethnic Albanians took to the streets of Kosovo’s capital, Pristina, to protest against the killing of a police officer.

Triumf Riza was gunned down in a car park last week. According to reports in the local media, several people have been detained in connection with his death. The authorities also want to question the head of a local organised crime gang.
