Condemning deliberate fire-setting and calling for EU solidarity funds to help Greece in the aftermath of its disastrous summer… The European Parliament has passed a resolution which also urges the formation of a European civil protection force, such as was proposed last year.
The MEPs have asked the European Commission to draw up policies for forest fire prevention. For this they stress the interest of active plans to reduce the depopulation of rural regions. The idea is that areas with permanent residents will be better looked after. Similarly, in Greece groups supporting environmental interests warned against the rapid development of burnt land.
During the debate in Strasbourg, several MEPs drew attention to the wider picture, linking severe forest fires this year in Spain, Bulgaria and Italy as well as in Greece – and severe floods in the UK – to climatic changes attributed to global warming.
They also called for corrective action in this area.
