The US President has arrived in Australia ahead of this weekend’s Asia-Pacific leaders summit. As head of the country’s strongest ally, George Bush was assured of a warm welcome officially.
Despite the Australian government’s full support of the war in Iraq, polls suggest the majority of the country is against it. Police fearing violent demonstrations have launched the country’s biggest ever security operation. There was a small, but noisy demonstration in the city just a few hours after Bush landed. However, several larger protests are planned during his visit, culminating in a major march on Saturday, when the 21 APEC heads gather at the Sydney Opera House.
