Climate change has been one of the hot topics in a meeting between the German Chancellor and the Chinese Premier in Beijing. Angela Merkel has urged Wen Jiabao to do more to help fight global warming. The Chinese premier said Beijing was committed to reducing greenhouse gases, but insisted that the West has been polluting the skies for much longer than China.
Another topic under the spotlight was Beijing’s relationship with Sudan. China has significant financial interests in Sudan and has been under pressure to take a tougher line with Khartoum over violence in Darfur.
Merkel said the basic rules for the gathering of resources should be the same worldwide – this was taken as criticism of China’s relations with Sudan. Merkel’s visit to China comes four months ahead of a summit of world environment ministers in Bali. They will try to launch new talks on how the Kyoto Protocol on climate change can be extended beyond 2012.
