The Israeli cabinet has held its weekly meeting in an atmopshere of increasing violence on Israel’s border with Gaza. This included a rare dawn breaching of the security fence which led to two gunmen being killed by the Israeli army. In all eight Palestinians have been killed so far this weekend, but Israel’s housing minister says more needs to be done to protect nearby Jewish settlements; “I do not exclude the possibility of going into Gaza from time to time as long as is needed. I don’t believe in protection on our side. For that we would have to put everyone in bunkers and that is totally against my beliefs”.
The weekend’s victims include a leader of Islamic Jihad in Jenin who was killed by an Israeli force disguised as Palestinians. The two Palestinians who entered Israel used morning fog as cover to scale the wall with their rope ladder. They have triggered a big security sweep. Israel blames Hamas, which took power in Gaza in June, for the upsurge in cross-border attacks.
