French politicians have been paying tribute to former Prime Minister Raymond Barre. Current Prime Minister Francois Fillon said he was a man who never attempted to hide the economic truth, even though it cost him dearly.

Recent presidential candidate Francois Bayrou called him a statesman who put the needs of his country above all other interests.

Another former Prime Minister, Michel Rocard who served under Jacques Chirac said he had great respect for Raymond Barre because he was competent, modest, and always honest and straightforward.
