All 165 holidaymakers and crew on board a jet which caught fire in Okinawa have been describing how lucky they were to escape. They slid down the evacuation chutes, when the port engine started billowing smoke. A few minutes later, the Taiwanese China Airlines Boeing 737-800 erupted.
The aircraft had just arrived at Naha Airport on Okinawa, after a flight from Taipeh. Everyone escaped the inferno safely. The fire brigade said just two passengers were taken to hospital complaining of nausea. Airport police say there is no indication that the fire was caused by terrorism.
Initial investigations are focusing on the possibility that the engine caught fire and exploded because of a fuel leak. An airline official said the aircraft had just undergone scheduled maintenance, and nothing untoward had happened during the flight itself.
