Sarkozy wades into sex offenders row

There are signs the honeymoon between the French and their new president could be coming to an end as he returns from holiday to face a range of problems including a paedophile scandal. Nicolas Sarkozy has announced new measures to deal with repeat sex offenders, including voluntary chemical castration.

It comes after a prison doctor admitted prescribing Viagra to a child molestor accused of raping a five-year old boy last week. The boy’s father says he expects much more from the government: “What I want is tough legislation,” he says. “That’s what they promised, and if they don’t do that, I will keep on fighting for it.”

61 year old Francis Evrard, who is accused of raping little Enis after abducting him last Wednesday, had just spent 18 years in jail for rape. The doctor who prescribed him Viagra said he had not had access to his medical records. Sarkozy also said a secure hospital would be built for paedophiles and that offenders would not be released until doctors had decided they were no longer dangerous.
