Afghans who seized pregnant German demanded ransom

More details are emerging about the abduction and release of a German woman in Afghanistan. It has been revealed five-months pregnant Christina Meier, was seized by a criminal gang who wanted a million dollars – 750,000 euros – in ransom. Afghan police managed to rescue Meier after 36 hours and capture four gang members.

German foreign minister, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, praised the security forces, saying without them, the release “would not have been possible”.

But he added there was still work to be done to rescue another German. The Taliban are holding engineer Rudolf Blechschmidt, saying they will not free him until Germany withdraws its troops from Afghanistan. The Taliban are also still holding 19 of a group of 23 South Koreans they seized a month ago. They have released two of the group but have executed two others.
