A strike by baggage handlers at airports across Portugal is now into its second day. Exasperated passengers face check-in queues and delays of up to three hours. Some flights have taken off without any baggage on board, others have been cancelled altogether.
The worst affected are those who have missed connecting flights. “I’ve been here for a long time. I’ve come from Brazil but landed in Lisbon three hours late and I’ve lost the flight to Italy” said one man. Another said: “I’ve come from Brazil to go to Berlin but my plane landed after the flight left for Berlin, and there’s nothing I can do about it for now.”
The baggage handlers are calling for their pay and what they see as excessive overtime hours to be reviewed. The strike is due to end at midnight local time.
