One American miner has died and eight others have been injured attempting to rescue colleagues trapped underground in Utah. At least three of the injured are in serious condition after a cave-in. The rescuers had been working at the Crandall Canyon Mine for 11 days trying to reach any possible survivors of the previous collapse. It’s thought the father and son of one of the missing miners may have been injured in this incident.
An eruption caused by drilling increasing the pressure in the rockface is being blamed. The rescuers had been encouraged in recent days after hearing noises underground, and discovering a cavity which would have provided enough oxygen to keep the men alive.
