Musharraf attends peace jirga in Afghanistan

world news

| |

Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf is attending the final session of a joint peace jirga or tribal council in Afghanistan. Musharraf addressed tribal leaders from both countries and held talks with Afghan President Hamid Karzai. Bilateral relations between the two are under strain as a result of Taliban activity. Both are allied to the US and engaged in counter terrorist operations. However, many Afghan officials accuse Pakistan of harbouring Taleban and al Qaeda fighters. Islamabad strongly denies the charge and lists a number of arrests of senior militant leaders. Pakistan also has to deal with a Taliban threat in its own tribal lands.
