Serbs have been commemorating victims of one of the most intensely debated conflicts of the Balkans wars. It is 12 years since Croatian forces drove Serbs out of the self-proclaimed Republic of Krajina in a military operation known as “Storm”. Around 2,500 Serbs were killed in the fighting and some 200,000 fled their homes. A rally in Belgrade was followed by a religious ceremony attended by Serbian leaders. Croatia rejects Serbia’s claim that what took place was ethnic cleansing. It says the aim of the operation was to reclaim an integral part of Croation territory that rebels wanted to become part of a ‘Greater Serbia’.
