Funerals for two European cinema greats

Popular French actor Michel Serrault has been laid to rest in the northern French town Honfleur. The 79 year-old actor died last Sunday following a long illness. Many of the mourners were from the world of stage and screen in France. French Prime Minister Francois Fillon and Culture Minister Christine Albanel came to pay their respects to a man who starred in more than 150 films. Among the better known was his performance in the movie “La Cage Aux folles.” Serrault was born in Paris and as a young man entered a Catholic seminary to study for the priesthood. He left to become an actor. The funeral has also taken place of another movie great, Italian director Michelangelo Antonioni. He passed away in Rome last Monday aged 94. He was considered a giant of his generation having brought success and prestige to Italian cinema. Antonioni was awarded a Hollywood Oscar in 1995 for his life achievement and contribution to world cinema. In his native Italy, he was labelled by some admirers as “an intellectual of cinema” and a “magician of light.”
