PM Brown makes first US trip

Ahead of his first trip to the US since becoming British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown has reaffirmed the special relationship between the two countries.Travelling with Foreign Secretary David Miliband, Brown will meet President Bush before speaking at the United Nations in New York on Tuesday. Among the topics of conversation are expected to be Kosovo, Darfur, climate change, Afghanistan and Iraq.

There had been speculation in the British media that Brown was starting to sound out Washington over a possible early withdrawal of Britain’s troops from Iraq, in a bid to distance himself from the policies of his predecessor Tony Blair.

But a UK government spokesman said London’s position had not changed, and that the 5,500 British soldiers would remain until the Iraqi army is capable of maintaining security by itself.
