KFOR troops battle wildfires in Kosovo

As wildfires rage across areas of southern Europe peacekeepers in Kosovo have been helping to tackle blazes there. Some 10,000 hectares have been burned. A KFOR spokesman said troops are doing what they can: “KFOR is not only committed to maintaining a safe and secure environment and freedom of movement all over Kosovo, but also to assist all residents of Kosovo in cases of urgent need.”

Italy’s been one of the hardest hit countries. Authorities have just ended a state of emergency after fires swept across the southern Puglia region. Thousands of tourists and local people were forced to take refuge on beaches at one stage.

Investigators believed the fires may have been started deliberately to clear land for building projects.

Emergency crews in Greece are continuing to wage a round-the-clock battle against about 100 fires as the country endures a prolonged and deadly heatwave.
