At least 11 people have been killed in a suicide bomb attack near Pakistan’s controversial Red Mosque. More than 40 others were wounded in the blast, which happened at a restaurant just 500 meters from the mosque in Islamabad. Many of the victims were policemen. Authorities say they believe the bomber was deliberately targeting the police.

The attack came after a day of heated confrontations between police and radical religious students at the mosque. The site was being re-opened after the army stormed it earlier this month in a bid to oust its leaders who wanted to impose Sharia law on the region. But many pro-Taliban followers of the previous imam remain defiant.
