Three ETA suspects, including a man presented by Spanish authorities as the head of the group’s logistics, have been arrested by French police. Madrid claims Juan Cruz Maiza Artola, 56, is also third in command of the Basque separatist organisation.
All three suspects were detained in the southern French town of Rodez. Police swooped on a house that had been under surveillance. “Everyone can understand that an organisation that loses its head of logistics suffers a significant loss,” said Spain’s Interior Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba, describing it as an important operation for Spanish police. The arrests are another example of cross-border co-operation in the fight against ETA, which called off its ceasefire last month.
