One of the 23 South Korean hostages being held in Afghanistan has been killed, according to the Taliban. Afghan authorities confirmed the death as the group warned it would murder further captives unless its demands are met. What is being described as a “final ultimatum” expires at 1am Thursday morning local time. The militants want Kabul to release Taliban prisoners.

The South Korean Christians were seized last week on the road between the capital and Kandahar, which they had been travelling by bus. Adding to the confusion, there was a further kidnapping overnight. Initially, a German journalist was said to have been seized. Now Afghan authorities say it was, in fact, a Danish reporter. He has since been released.
