Small blasts hit Tour de France after ETA threat

Terrorism cast a shadow over the famous Tour de France cycle race today. Two small explosions hit the event after a telephone bomb threat made in the name of ETA. No one was hurt in the blasts along a road in the Spanish section of the course. The devices, placed in plastic containers, went off before competitors passed by. The warning said that several bombs had been planted along the route of today’s Tour stage from Orthez to Gourette, prompting security checks.

In a separate development, a suspected ETA member was picked up by police in southwestern France. It is the 15th such arrest in Spain and abroad since the Basque separatist group called off a ceasefire last month.
