The family of the Palestinian trainee doctor, imprisoned in Libya along with the Bulgarian nurses, watched his arrival in Sofia, on Euronews, from their home in Woerden, Holland. Ashraf Ahmed Joma was working at the paediatric hospital in Benghazi when he was arrested in 1999. His father said he didn’t know where his son was being held for the first 10 months. When the family was eventually able to visit him they didn’t recognise him. Ashraf told his family he had been beaten repeatedly during his detention and given electric shocks.
His sister said she had always hoped Libyan justice would free her brother but in the darkest moments she had lost all confidence in that. The family will be reunited in Bulgaria tomorrow. Ashraf was granted Bulgarian citizenship while in jail to allow him to be released with the others.
