A major part of Spain’s second city Barcelona was left without electricity after a chain reaction of disasters led to fires at power distribution centres. A pylon carrying high-tension power lines collapsed, sparking the blazes in a transformer and a second facility. There were chaotic scenes on the roads as traffic lights failed, causing still more problems for emergency services trying to get to people trapped in lifts. Hospitals had to improvise as wards and examination rooms were plunged into darkness.
Barcelona’s metro system was also hit, with trains grinding to a halt underground. And restaurant owners fought a battle against a big thaw in their fridges and freezers.
