The last king of Afghanistan has died in Kabul. 92 year-old Mohammed Zahir Shah ruled his nation for 40 years before fleeing to exile in Italy in 1973. He finally went home, to his old palace, 5 years ago. Since then he has enjoyed the title of “Father of the Nation”. While King he instituted a democratic legislature and promoted education for women. But his critics say thousands of people in the central and northern highlands died of starvation while he built himself castles, and bought villas, in Italy. He was also said to have given all the major government jobs to his family or members of his own Pashtun tribe. He was ousted by a coup led by his cousin ending his dynasty.
