One person has been killed and at least seven injured in an attack on an environmentalist camp in southeast Siberia. Witnesses said at least 15 people armed with metal pipes raided the area where protesters had been demonstrating against the reprocessing of nuclear waste at a local plant. The area’s acting police chief said: “The suspects do not belong to any youth extremist groups. We have not found any extremist literature and we are treating the incident as hooliganism.”
So far, two people have been detained in the police investigation. The injured were taken to a nearby hospital. The environmentalist group has been protesting outside the nuclear reprocessing plant since July 14. The site is about 100 kilometres from Lake Baikal, one of the world’s largest sources of fresh water.
