Pakistan’s Supreme Court has reinstated its outspoken President, Iftikhar Chaudhury, after he was ousted by President Musharraf. Chaudhury was suspended in March amid allegations that he was interfering in matters outside his remit. Today the court declared that suspension illegal. The judge’s removal prompted angry demonstrations across the country in which a number of people were killed. Opposers of Perves Musharraf said the judge had been removed to clear the way for the President to change the constitution so he could serve another term.
