Bulgaria's tourist image tarnished by rapes

Bulgaria’s Sunny Beach is marketed as “The sunniest resort for the sunniest people.” But it has been the centre of a number of a violent attacks and thefts on young Scandinavian tourists. Between the 4th and the 12th of this month four Danish women aged between 16-18 have allegedly been raped at the Black Sea resort.

Coupled with the beating to death of a young Swedish man, and the death last week of a 18-year Dane from excessive drinking, the holiday paradise has come to the attention of the Danish Board of Health. Jan Lockhart of the Apollo Rejser travel Agency says: “Its important the Bulgarian authorities deal with these incidents and make the resort safe.” There is local resentment about such resorts, with tourists attracted by cheap flights, hot sun and bargain booze.
