Anger at airport as aircrash families wait for news

The agony of relatives wanting to know the fate of their loved ones provoked emotional and angry scenes at Sao Paolo airport. They could now be facing a very long wait for information as witnesses spoke of a terrifying inferno.

“The wheel hit the ground, right near my taxi,” said one woman, clutching her child. “The taxi driver managed to stop and then I saw the wing swerve into an airline warehouse. That’s when the plane exploded. I just ran, everyone ran.”

“The tower authorised our take-off and we were taking-off when we saw the explosion,” said an airport technician.

The crash is likely to be the worst-ever in Brazilian history. Three days of mourning have been announced.
