Kosovo PM wants deadline for independence deal

world news

| |

Kosovo’s Prime Minister, Agim Ceku, is urging the European Union to back the idea of a deadline for its independence to be settled. But for now the EU’s foreign policy chief, Javier Solana, says he remains committed to resolving the issue by a United Nations Security Council resolution.

Kosovo’s leaders want a UN Security Council resolution to establish its status. Such a move is being blocked by Russia, a close ally of Belgrade, which insists no such outcome can be imposed on Serbia. Russia insists the majority of Kosovo Albanians and Serbs must reach agreement before the UN plan can be implemented.
