Dahrendorf takes Asturias prize

Ralf Dahrendorf has been given the 2007 Prince of Asturias award for Social Sciences. Jury chairman Manuel Fraga Iribarne made the announcement in Oviedo, Spain. German born Dahrendorf is considered one of the greatest exponents of contemporary liberal thought. His defining work is Class and Class Conflict in Industrial Society, in which he claimed Karl Marx had defined class too narrowly as being determined by property, saying power was the key, with society being divided into “order takers” and “order givers”. The Asturias awards are decided by peer group juries who select from worldwide nominations.
