Spanish police arrest suspected ETA members

A number of suspected ETA members have been arrested in Spain. Artiz Arginzoniz Zubiarre was caught in Santander, allegedly in possession of weapons and bomb-making equipment. It is believed he had been on the run since January following the discovery in the Basque Country of another cache of explosives. Since the militant Basque group called an end to its 15-month ceasefire in June, Spanish and French authorities have intensified a crackdown on suspected members.

Spain’s Interior Minister has revealed that police have foiled a terror attack he believes would have been carried out in the next few days. Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba said it follows the arrest in southern France last week of an alleged ETA commando. He was said to be carrying more than 150 kilos of explosives. He also went on to say that police in the Basque country have arrested four young radical separatists with alleged links to ETA. Detectives believe the group masterminded around 40 attacks in urban areas of Alba province over the last three years.
