There has been a surge in sectarian violence in Iraq

This is the Shi’ite village of Ermeli, close to Tuz Khurmato, north of Baghdad, which was virtually destroyed in a sectarian bombing on Saturday.

The explosion killed an estimated 150 people and injured several hundred more.

Authorities are still searching for bodies in the wreckage of the shattered village.

An Iraqi observer said it looked as if an earthquake had occurred there.

Hundreds of injured were ferried by ambulances to Kirkuk, more than 100 kilometres away.

Many of them were women and children.

The sectarian violence continued with a second spate of bombings in and near the Iraqi capital Baghad.

The surge in bombings comes in spite of a major security clampdown by US and Iraqi troops..

In two attacks in the city 8 died.

In a third attack, a suicide truck bomber killed 23 new Sunni army recruits near the town of Haswa. .
