Little remains of a 4X4 vehicle after it was rammed by what is suspected to have been an al-Qaeda suicide bomber in Yemen. Seven spanish tourists died in the blast along with two yemeni guides. Six other members of the party were injured, one of them seriously. The bomber struck as the group left the temple of the Queen of Sheba in the late afternoon. It is understood an al-Qaeda statement last week demanded the release of some of its members jailed in Yemen and warned of unspecified actions if that demand was not met.
The attack happened in the province of Marib around 150 kilometres east of the capital, Sanaa. Witnesses said the blast was so strong it was heard far away. The wounded were taken to hospitals in Sanaa and Marib. Scores of tourists and foreign workers have been abducted in Yemen over the years but this suicide attack is a new development.
