New UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown has presided over his first cabinet meeting at number 10 Downing Street, the day after taking office.
41-year-old David Miliband arrived with Jacquie Smith. He’s the new Foreign Secretary, the youngest ever. Smith takes up the post of Home Secretary, the first female to occupy the role.
Jack Straw is now the Justice Secretary, while former Trade Secretary, Alastair Darling, has been appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer, in charge of Britain’s finances.
Geoff Hoon is now government Chief Whip.
Newly appointed Health Secretary Alan Johnson arrived on his own.
It was a huge overhaul of his predecessor, Tony Blair’s team.
Eleven members of the old Cabinet are not in Brown’s first administration and there are nine new arrivals in the 22-strong line-up.
It seems, as he promised he would on Wednesday, that the new British Prime Minister has already started anew.
