Men-free beach in Italy - one for the girls

Italian women tired of unwanted attention from men while sunbathing on the beach now have their own exclusive stretch of sand on the Adriatic coast. The town of Riccione has banned both men and children. For women who like to strip off to take in the sun, it makes for a more relaxing experience on the longer.

One female sunbather said: “ For many women who want to sunbathe topless, for instance, it’s a great plus not to have men around, because often men won’t go away and they stare incessantly.”

Not everyone sticks to the new rules. Men have been seen passing through the restricted area, despite the signs, and others have peered in from the outside of the perimeter.

Male beachgoers are not so impressed. “I think it’s very stupid men and women should mix together. Otherwise what are we doing on this planet,” said one. But women can now engage in beach activities free from prying eyes and corny chat up lines.
